4 Job Hunting Tips for Dental Assisting

Target the Right Clinics

Identify what kind of office suits you based on your overall interests and training. Dental assistants are needed across many specialty offices and services like pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery, etc, in addition to general dentist practices. If a specialty position looks attractive, but you do not have the right training for the job, consider adding on to your credentials for higher pay and a job you’ll enjoy.

Visit Offices in Person

Rather than submit your application online, take a trip and drop off your resume in-person. It’s best to aim for slow hours—typically mid-morning or mid-afternoon on weekdays. Make sure to dress professionally and introduce yourself to whoever accepts your resume. A smile and confident attitude can make a big first impression.

Be Open to Temp Work

Though not ideal for long term career growth, temporary positions can help you get your foot in the door at a dental practice and allow you to build real-life experience while looking for a permanent job. Temping also often leads to full-time job offers after the temporary opening is fulfilled. Agencies or apps like Stynt or Cloud Dentistry can help you find a suitable temporary position.

Prepare for Interviews

Don’t wing it when it’s time to present yourself in an interview. Be ready to talk about experience you have assisting during procedures, your infection control practices and even details like how well you handle nervous patients and/or children. When it comes time for your interview, dress professionally and bring hard copies of your resume and credentials.
